Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, along with the Faculty of Agriculture at Hasanuddin University, discussed various challenges in the agricultural sector in a public lecture, providing an opportunity for students to share their concerns. The event served as a forum for dialogue, particularly regarding the state of agriculture in the field, on Tuesday (June 2).

The event, attended by 300 students, was interactive, with students sharing their perspectives and information on agricultural conditions in their communities. Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman explained that the government continues to strengthen production through irrigation development and rehabilitation, the provision of superior seeds utilizing potential land in several regions of Indonesia, and various land optimization and protection efforts.

“The conversion of rice fields must not be allowed, especially rice fields and irrigation, which must be protected because they are the main foundation of national food security,” he said.

The discussion also touched on the development of agricultural-based renewable energy. He stated that downstreaming palm oil into biodiesel is one step toward supporting energy independence while simultaneously increasing the added value of domestic commodities. He believes Indonesia’s resource potential can be optimally and sustainably developed to strengthen the food and energy sectors.

At the conclusion of the activity, Amran Sulaiman urged students to think and act critically in decision-making, as agriculture is linked to the survival of humanity. He also appreciated the students’ enthusiasm in the discussion and hoped that the younger generation of farmers would contribute through innovation and community service to Indonesia’s sustainable agricultural development.
