Unhas Faculty of Agriculture Holds International Conference, Discussing Agricultural Technology and Innovation in Sustainable Agriculture and World Food Security

Hasanuddin University’s Faculty of Agriculture held an International Conference with the headline “Agricultural Technology and Innovations for Environmental Resiliency: Collaboration for Global Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security.” Taking place starting at 8.00 WITA, this seminar is intended as a forum for sharing views and ideas in utilizing agricultural technology and innovation to overcome food security problems in sustainable agriculture, Wednesday (30/10).

Present as speakers included Dr. B. M. Prasanna (Malze Program Director of CIMMYT), Assoc. Prof. Daisuke Tsugama (Tokyo University, Japan), Prof. Prakash Kumar (National University of Singapore), Mohsen Gavahian, Ph.D (National Pingtung University, Taiwan), Assoc. Prof. Nitty Hirawaty Kamarulzaman (Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia), Prof. Dr. Ir. Yunus Musa, M.Sc (Hasanuddin University, Indonesia), Dr. Thong Nguyen-Huy (University of Southern Queensland, Australia), Dr. Peri Tobias (Sydney University, Australia), Wanrat Abdullakasim, Ph.D (Kasetsart University, Thailand), and Dr.rer.silv. Thomas Jung (Mendel University, Czech Republic).

Starting the activity, Dr. Rahmansyah Dermawan, S.P., M.Si as Chair 9th IC-FANRes 2024 in his report stated that world agriculture is currently facing various challenges in terms of food availability. Some of the problems experienced are the lack of knowledge and technology to overcome them, including biotechnology, the crisis of young farmers, and natural resources affecting the world of agriculture.

“Global research and collaboration between experts is really needed by farmers and the agricultural sector to overcome various problems. Apart from that, it is also important to develop natural food sources as an alternative form and diversification of food,” he explained.

Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc in his speech said that the conference offered an opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other. In addition, to create connections that will increase collective knowledge and understanding of food, agriculture and natural resource issues that are faced together.

“The world is changing rapidly so collaboration and research across disciplines has never been more important. The challenges we face today are complex and diverse, requiring creative and innovative approaches,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Yuli Witono, S.TP., M.P as President of FANRes expressed pride in the dedication of the participants in the conference. According to him, this shows the enthusiasm of the participants to find solutions together to overcome the various issues they face.

“The theme raised at this conference is very interesting and relevant to fulfilling and developing current needs. This activity also presents extraordinary and competent speakers in their fields from various countries,” he said.

Representing the Chancellor and opening the event, Prof. Dr. Muh. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D., Sp.MK warmly welcomed the speakers who had taken the time to share their knowledge and the researchers who would also present their research results. He revealed that the aim of this conference was to gather scholars in one discussion forum.

“This conference was held to bring together experts to create a platform to enrich discussions regarding challenges and opportunities in the field of food agriculture and natural resources which can pave the way towards sustainable food production,” he explained before officially opening the activity.

The activity is scheduled to take place over two days in a hybrid online and offline.
