He hopes that the findings produced in the scope of the Unhas laboratory are not only something that has been previously discovered by outside researchers but something completely new so that the existence of Unhas is increasingly advanced in the eyes of the world. “To become an international university is not easy, we have to change ourselves at the international level. Our system must change so that we can adapt to the global system,” he said. The Minister of Agriculture of Brazil, Cordeiro, who also delivered a speech during his visit, thanked the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo who specially invited him to attend the Unhas Anniversary ceremony. Cordeiro also carried a message from the President of Brazil to establish cooperation in agriculture with Indonesia as well as cooperation in other fields. “After going through 50 years of difficult times in the agricultural sector, Brazil is now one of the largest producers in the sector. Brazilian products are known for their good quality and integrated quality assurance. This can happen due to the commitment of research, innovation, and education,” he explained. He further hopes to continue the cooperation initiatives that he had previously discussed with the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture. This is done because in recent years there have been global climate-related problems that have hit all countries (global warming) so he hopes to strengthen cooperation between countries. The Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, Syahrul Yasin Limpo on the same occasion also delivered a scientific oration. For him, the people of South Sulawesi as the closest environment of Unhas have a value system and cultural character that makes them great and respected by other ethnic groups in Indonesia and even the world. He believes that it can be a pillar to lead to an advanced, independent, and modern Indonesia, especially in responding to various global challenges that have hardly been experienced before. “I believe that the Unhas campus is filled with qualified academic people so that those who fill the campus are called academicians,” he said. The ceremony ended with the signing ofa memorandum of understanding (MOU) and cooperation agreement between Unhas and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture as well as the signing of an MOU between Unhas and the partnership. The activity was opened with remarks by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc who expressed his concern about aspects of pests and diseases that can one day hit plants. He pointed out that currently agriculture is being hit by caterpillars that attack corn crops. “What we will discuss in this seminar is something that is very important to maintain the sustainability of production, the sustainability of agriculture in our country. As we know, one of the aspects that greatly affects production is the pest and disease aspect, and to avoid this happening, the first entrance is quarantine,” he said. Rector of Hasanuddin University Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc who took the time to open the event emphasized that agriculture is part of basic human needs. He said that the topic ofthe smart systemseminar is a very important topic to protect not only for crop protection needs but also for food security so that Indonesia survives as a country that has strong agricultural capabilities. “I am very aware that the need for science, the need for technology, the need for innovation are very important,” he said. He urged all participants who attended to take advantage of the knowledge gained from thesmart plant protection implementation seminar. He said to not only focus on agricultural science but also study other sciences that might be applicable in the concept of agriculture. By studying other sciences, he hopes that the participants can get new innovations in preventing or making something that can help in terms of agricultural protection. The three speakers who attended the seminar and socialization of agricultural quarantine were the Head of the Center for Compliance, Cooperation, and Quarantine Information, Ir. Junaidi, MM with the seminar material, “The Role of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency to Realize Gratieks for Advanced, Independent, and Modern Indonesian Agriculture,” Unhas Engineering Lecturer Dr. Indrabayu, S.T., M.T., M.Bus.Sys with the material “Implementation ofArtificial Intelligence in Preventing the Spread of Disease,” as well as Unhas Agricultural Lecturer Prof. Dr. Ir. A. Nasruddin, M.Sc with the seminar material, “Discovery of New Species of Pests in Several Plant Commodities in South Sulawesi.” Junaidi as the head of the quarantine center explained that one of the duties of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency is to supervise and / or control food safety and food quality, including rare plants spread throughout Indonesia. He added that as one of the largest producers of foodstuffs in the world, the agriculture minister directly instructed Barantan to help in increasing food exports. Indrabayu as a Lecturer of Informatics, Faculty of Engineering Unhas on the same occasion introduced technology that can monitor the estimated readiness and yield of fruit harvests in plantations. In addition, a tool was also introduced that can measure the degree of maturity of the harvested fruit. In his explanation, Indrabayu also confirmed the rector’s statement that science should not be allowed to run independently, but should be collaborated in order to be able to create the best innovations. As the last speaker, Prof. Nasruddin explained about various pests that attack several plants in South Sulawesi. He expressed his concern about the sustainability of Indonesia’s agricultural system, especially South Sulawesi. One example is a pest that shortens the productive life of plants so that they can reduce the amount of production. “It is also necessary to regularly monitor the status of the presence of these pests or this disease, whether they are still in the field, whether they are still destructive, or no longer exist,” he added before ending the presentation. Located on the 1st floor of the Faperta Unhas Hall, the seminar which was attended by active students to agricultural alumni was held on Tuesday morning, at 9.00 WITA until it was completed (30/8/2022). The company, which is actively a global producer of seeds and pesticides, chose the Unhas campus not without intent. The purpose of holding this activity is to bridge the cooperation between the Faculty of Agriculture Unhas and Syngenta Indonesia. Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc welcomed the intention of Syngenta Indonesia, especially when Syngenta Indonesia offers job opportunities for agricultural graduates and internships for active students. Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Unhas (Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc) “I think this is a very good opportunity so that later if there are students who want internships or Unhas agricultural alumni who want to work at Syngenta, it will be easier for them,” said Prof. Salengke He also saw visionary solutions that could be developed in the next ten to twenty years if agriculture is managed innovatively with knowledge and technology utilization. He is optimistic that optimal management can overcome the current problems. “Hopefully our activities today can give us an idea of what kind of opportunities exist, which can be done to help agriculture not only in South Sulawesi, but also in Indonesia,” he added before officially opening the activity. Head of Business Sustainability, Midzon L I Johannis revealed that the agricultural sector is the oldest sector and the farmer profession is the oldest profession on the face of the earth. According to him, anyone can have any profession, but it is the agricultural sector that prepares food for them. That is the importance of the agricultural and peasant sector. Nevertheless, Midzon showed concern for the current agricultural problems. An example of a current agricultural problem is the reduction of agricultural land, so it must increase the productivity of limited land and agricultural land that has to adjust to a very low climate due toclimate change caused byglobal warming. “Mr. prof said earlier that in the next decades the earth’s population will reach 9 billion people, currently it is 8 billion people. Now that many houses, shophouses, embankments, housing and farmland are shrinking so let’s build an ideology to increase the productivity of these fewer and fewer resources,” Midzon said. Therefore, through the “Syngenta Goes to Campus” program, Midzon wants agricultural graduates and prospective graduates not to think that agricultural graduates will only work in a small area, he invites them to form a mindset that agricultural graduates work to support the food needs of the world community. Furthermore, Midzon explained about how the Syngenta company works, overproduction, to the research support facilities they have. “We want the world to grow in a sustainable way, we want to collaborate with anyone to build agriculture in the world. The goal is to improve the food welfare of farmers,” he said again. Letran Silalahi asHead of Human Resourcesat Syngenta Indonesia, believes that agricultural graduates can take agriculture in a better direction with a note that they must be able to work well as individuals and as a team. He added that Syngenta as one of the largest agribusiness companies in the world and has a presence in 100 countries requires diverse talents, be it diverse in terms of understanding, experience, and knowledge without being restricted by gender. “This is one of our projects, how can we produce quality young talents with more and more agricultural equipment that can be used and developed,” said Letran. The purpose of holding the activity, according to Letran, is so that young agricultural graduates can join Syngenta, together to address problems in the agricultural sector globally and prepare them to become leaders of the agricultural sector in the future. Carrying the theme “Unhasku for the People,” the activity was held at the Multipurpose Building, Maros Regency on Thursday (25/8/2022). Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc as the Chairman of this year’s Anniversary Committee revealed that a series of community service activities in Maros Regency have been carried out from June to August. There are 34 community services that have been carried out and involved more than 100 Unhas lecturers. “Last week we have carried out mass Moringa planting activities, the number we brought from Unhas was around 1500 Moringa sticks, although the rector actually suggested 10,000 at least,” he said. According to Prof. Salengke, the purpose of community service is to encourage people to be more enthusiastic in taking advantage of opportunities, such as the opportunity to process Moringa for the benefit of household health and even economic interests whenever possible. He also said that the service activities that have been carried out before will show off the results of their work during the activities. “In the morning, there will also be demonstrations on how to produce healthy food that can be implemented by the community. Later our team, the Faculty of Agriculture will conduct a demosnration. In addition, the team from Nursing will do a screening back there. It is aimed at children from relatives’ families,” he added. Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc in his speech also labeled Maros as one of the favored districts in Sulawesi. He argued that Maros is a buffer for Makassar so that Unhas, local governments, and the community should work together to take advantage of Maros’ geography, geopolitics, geoeconomics, and natural resources (SDA). “Maros from the sea to the coast exists, from rice fields to mountains exists, so Maros is indeed a paradise for people who want to build a civilized civilization, which is modern but also with a healthy, strong, and prosperous society, of course peace-loving,” he said. Prof. Jamaluddin assured that community service is the first step that can be a great benefit for the community. He also revealed that the Minister had asked Unhas to coordinate food supply in the Sulawesi region. “Although in Sulawesi we will not be short of food in the near future, but we hope that Sulawesi will become a national solution. If necessary, we help countries that are close to Sulawesi and if necessary Maros is one of the areas that we excel in supporting world food security because there is currently climate change. Climate change causes various problems in crops but with the science, technology, and information developed by agricultural friends, hopefully in this Dies Natalis activity, it can provide solutions related to the food faced,” he added optimistically. H.A.S Chaidir Syam, S.IP., M.H as the Regent of Maros Regency expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in community service in Maros Regency. One of the community services that concerns him is the use of Moringa leaves as nutritional fulfillment to prevent stunting carried out the previous week. The hope is that after the counseling conducted by Unhas, the problem of stunting in Maros Regency the following year can be reduced, even if possible to get out of the red zone. “We hope to establish cooperation, mutually beneficial relationships, provide this information to each other so that it continues to be established. moreover, the distance between Hasanuddin University and Maros Regency is very close. This is our hope in the future,” explained the regent who is also an alumnus of Unhas. Before ending the activity, a symbolic signing of cooperation between Unhas and the Maros Regency Office was carried out to continue and present programs that can be a solution to various problems in the community. Invited guests who attended the activity were also welcome to visit the booths of community service products that had been prepared. Back Next
