The Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University held an International Symposium entitled “International Symposium on Transdisciplinary Research” which discussed autonomous innovation in Rural Communities in Malawi and Indonesia and its implications for Social-Ecological Transformation Towards a Sustainable Future. The activity took place starting at 09.00 WITA in the LPPM Building Hall, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Thursday (25/7).
Presentation of the symposium report by Dr. Ir. Asmita Ahmad, ST., M.Si as chairman of the committee. He expressed the hope that today’s symposium could become a good discussion forum for the participants who took part in the activity.
The speakers present were Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc (Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Unhas), Prof. Tetsu Sato (Collaborative Regional Innovation, Ehime University), and Prof. Dr. Ir. Dorothea Agnes Rampisela, M.Sc.
Speakers from three nations were also in attendance, Prof. Motoko Shimagani (Researcher), Mr. Herwin Hartawan (Leader of For Green Indonesia, Polewali, West Sulawesi, Indonesia), Dr. Yasuko Kusakari (JICA Expert and Long-Term Researcher on Well-being in the IntNRSMS Project), Ohashi Koichi (Head of Japan Consular Office in Makassar), John Banana Matewere (Team Leader, Sustainable Cape Maclear), and Ilyas (Leader of Federation of Waters Users Association).
Prof. Salengke in his speech welcomed the speakers who would share knowledge and innovation in today’s symposium. He revealed that this activity was a very good opportunity to broaden one’s network with the participation of farming professionals in attendance.
“I think this is where we can share knowledge, ideas, and provide solutions to each other’s agricultural issues,” he said.
Prof. Salengke further mentioned that students who participate in this activity, whether online or offline, should take note of it as a potential study topic for the future.
On the same occasion, Prof. Tetsu Sato also expressed his appreciation and pride for being part of the symposium. The hope is that all parties present, starting from representatives of Indonesia, Japan and Malawi, can discuss various matters in the agricultural sphere.
“Science is so important, we may not realize how necessary it is to create a sustainable platform for developing communities,” he added.
The end of the activity continued with a product and business presentation session by 13 farming business actors in South Sulawesi. The activity lasts until 16.00 WITA.
