Indonesia Minister of Agriculture Dr. Ir. Andi Amran Sulaiman, MP gave a public lecture at the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, discussing the Influence of Culture in Intercultural Communication in the Business Environment. The activity started at 08:30 WITA on LT 6 Faperta, Tuesday (16/4).
In his presentation, the Minister of Agriculture explained that intercultural or cross-cultural communication is very important in the business world. Intercultural communication can provide positive interaction for both business actors so that it can improve business performance. Apart from that, it can also reduce the potential for conflict between cultural differences.
He explained that something that needs to be considered in intercultural communication is sensitivity to understanding each other’s culture. Non-verbal communication in the form of gestures is also a point that often causes misunderstandings.
“The pointing gestures between Bugis and Javanese people are different, don’t let the index finger used by Bugis people offend the feelings of Javanese people and vice versa,” he said.
He also added that before doing business to other areas, it is best to have the ability to adapt quickly. This can build trust in other parties who want to work together.
“Cross-cultural communication can increase business productivity and efficiency on a global scale and can strengthen business organizations,” he continued.
Ending the activity, the Minister of Agriculture gave motivation to the students present to always try to explore the world of business. According to him, profit and loss are something that always go hand in hand and cannot be separated.
