In collaboration with the South Sulawesi Provincial Government, Unhas and the Faculty of Agriculture launched millions of Cavendish Banana seeds. The activity, which was carried out as a form of support for the government program, “The Banana Planting Movement”, started at 10.00 WITA do Experimental Farm (Ex Farm) Unhas, Thursday (16/11).
Present at the activity, Dr. Ir. H. La Tunrang, MM., IPU as General Chair of the South Sulawesi CSR Forum and Managing Director of PT. Hadin Academic Metavision. Also present were Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc as Chancellor of Hasanuddin University and Dr. Bahtiar Baharuddin, M.Si as Acting Governor of South Sulawesi and staff.
On this occasion, La Tunrang said that he hoped that Unhas agriculture alumni could be directly involved with the program by providing training first. According to him, this program could become a supporting fund for Unhas in the future.
“With this program it is hoped that one hectare can produce approximately 265 million. One hectare is the same as 2,000 trees, 1 tree is approximately 20 kilos,” he said.
Meanwhile Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc as Chancellor of Unhas said that this activity could be a significant step to strengthen the agricultural sector. Through this program, Unhas together with the Faculty of Agriculture are committed to assisting the government in its efforts to improve the welfare of the nation and people.
“Developing banana seeds by utilizing tissue culture techniques to reproduce corn plants efficiently,” he added.
Furthermore, Bahtiar as Acting Governor of South Sulawesi expressed his pride and gratitude for the good collaboration between Unhas and the South Sulawesi Provincial Government. He stated that this program could minimize fruit imports in Indonesia considering the strength of South Sulawesi’s natural resources (SDA).
Bahtiar considers that this activity is a form of strengthening the agricultural sector through the cultivation of Cavendish bananas. This can be seen from the collaboration between universities, government and society in achieving common goals.
“The provincial government is ready to help with everything needed to make this program a success, so I have high hopes for all parties involved,” explained Bahtiar.
After continuing the signing of the collaboration between Unhas and the South Sulawesi Provincial Government, a symbolic joint planting of banana seeds was carried out. The series of activities ran smoothly until 12.30 WITA.
