The Agricultural Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Unhas held a Public Lecture with the title“Fruit Juice Processing,” presenting speakers from Vienna University of Technology (Tu Wien) Austria, Prof. Dr.nat.techn. Heidi Halbwirth. The activity took place starting at 13.30 WITA and was located on LT 6 Faperta (31/8).
Starting the activity, Deputy Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Faperta, Dr. rer. nat. Zainal, S.TP., M.Food.Tech as moderator introduced the profile of the speaker and the topics that would be discussed.
“The topic this time is about fruit juice processing, this is a very interesting topic to listen to, especially because the participants all come from agricultural engineering study programs,” he said.
Prof. Heidi expressed her gratitude for receiving a warm welcome from the Faculty of Agriculture, Unhas. According to her, it was an honor to be able to stand at that place as an invited guest to give a public lecture.
Prof. Heidi in her material revealed that many fruits have not been utilized optimally. There are fruits that only use less than 10% of the total amount and throw away most of the others even though the fruit is suitable for consumption while on a diet.
“This is very unfortunate, even though there are many benefits that can be gained from fruit flesh because fruit is the most important plant after grain,” explained Prof. Heidi.
She also mentioned the importance of creating innovative fruit products that can attract consumers’ attention to buy them. Fruit in the form of juice has many fans but what needs to be paid attention to is the processing process.
“The bioactive content in fruit juice is very important because it contains nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants so it requires special attention in every process carried out. For example, you have to pay attention to the availability of fruit and success in maintaining its nutrition,” she continued.
After the material ended, it continued with a question and answer session between the participants present and the resource person. The activity ended with souvenirs given directly by Prof. Dr. Ir. Salengke, M.Sc as Dean of Faperta Unhas to Prof. Haidi as resource person.
