First Harvest of Early-Yielding Rice and Jago Corn Breeding, Collaborative Cooperation between the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, and the Bantaeng Regency Agriculture Service

The Vice Rector for IV of Hasanuddin University together with the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of Hasanuddin University attended the first harvest of the Genjah Rice and Jago Corn breeding, the result of a collaborative collaboration between the Faculty of Agriculture of Hasanuddin University and the Bantaeng Regency Agriculture Service. The activity was carried out in the context of rice seed assistance in an effort to support food independence and self-sufficiency as well as the downstreaming of the JJ-UH 01, 02, 03 hybrid corn of the Ministry of Education and Culture Science and Technology Impact which was held on Jl Lingkar Barat, Next to the Bantaeng KPU Office, Bantaeng Regency, Wednesday (28/1).

The Regent of Bantaeng, Muhammad Fathul Fauzy Nurdin, in his remarks revealed that collaborative assistance with Unhas has been carried out since 2012, not only regarding seeds, but also covering pest and disease control, planting patterns and seasons, and the selection of planting varieties.

He also cited the success of previous collaborations, including the establishment of a tissue culture laboratory in 2013-2014, which enabled the production of its own potato seeds. He also developed a superior variety called Lokana, which is larger in size. He hopes Bantaeng Regency will become a technology-based seed regency.

Prof. Dr. Eng. Adi Maulana, S.T, M.Phil as Vice Rector IV of Unhas representing the Rector of Unhas stated that this activity is a concrete manifestation of Unhas Impact, namely that the results of university research can provide direct benefits to the local government and the community.

“Going forward, this can serve as a role model for other regions in South Sulawesi, demonstrating that research findings can be developed to impact regional income and improve farmer welfare,” he hoped.

The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Hasanuddin University stated that this collaboration demonstrates the university’s role in supporting agricultural sector development through innovation and science-based mentoring. Furthermore, this activity also serves as a platform for field learning for lecturers, students, government officials, and the community.

The activity ended with the symbolic first harvest of early-ripening rice and corn by the Regent, Vice Chancellor, Dean and other staff.
